Sim rig cockpit buyer's guide
Once you move beyond a gear-driven starter wheel, your mount matters almost as much as the wheel. A desk that flexes, pedals that slide, or a chair that rolls back under braking all make you slower and less consistent. There are three main ways to mount your gear: a wheel stand, a foldable or tube-frame cockpit, or an aluminium profile cockpit. Here's what each suits, and what to check before you buy in Australia.
Cockpit makers rarely publish strict torque limits, and when they do, listings sometimes disagree. Below we quote what the maker or an Australian retailer says, and flag where there's no official figure. No prices: check the current price.
The three types compared

| Aluminium profile | Trak Racer TR80Sim-Lab GT1 EVO | Bucket seat (often extra) | Yes, high torque | Fixed, largest | Serious DD, load cells, upgrades |
Wheel stands
A wheel stand holds the wheel and pedals in a steel frame, and you sit in your own chair. They're the cheapest stable upgrade over a desk and usually fold away. The Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 is widely stocked in Australia. JB Hi-Fi's listing says it's compatible with wheelbases up to 20 Nm, noting that stability above the tested rating can vary. Some other retailers quote different figures, so treat the number as a guide. NLR also sells a Wheel Stand DD designed for direct drive. A stand's weak point is usually the chair: office chairs roll back under hard braking, so lock the castors or use a fixed chair. Check Wheel Stand 2.0 price.
Foldable cockpits
Foldable cockpits include a seat and fold flat for storage, which is great for apartments. The trade-off is stiffness. Playseat's Challenge X FAQ says it isn't recommended for direct drive and points direct drive users to the Trophy. Next Level Racing's F-GT Lite folds too and switches between formula and GT seating. Check NLR's current compatibility notes for your base before pairing it with direct drive. Check Challenge X price · Check F-GT Lite price.
Tube-frame cockpits
Fixed steel cockpits like the Playseat Trophy and Next Level Racing GTtrack are a step up in rigidity. Playseat recommends the Trophy for direct drive, though it doesn't publish a maximum Nm. NLR describes the GTtrack as designed for direct drive wheels and professional pedals. They take up a fixed footprint, so measure first. Check Trophy price · Check GTtrack price.
Aluminium profile cockpits
Aluminium profile rigs are built from extruded aluminium beams (often 40×80 mm) bolted together. They're the stiffest common option and endlessly adjustable: you can add monitor stands, shifters, handbrakes, button boxes and later upgrades without buying a new rig. Trak Racer is an Australian company with a Melbourne showroom, and its TR80 uses 80×40 mm profile. Sim-Lab's GT1 EVO is another popular choice. Most profile rigs need a separate seat and seat brackets, so check what's included. They're the usual choice for 10 Nm-plus bases like the Thrustmaster T818 (10 Nm constant) or the bigger Simagic and Moza bases. Check aluminium cockpits.
What torque can each handle?
- Desk clamp: fine for gear and belt wheels and many entry DD bases at sensible strength. See our direct drive wheelbase guide for maker-listed torque.
- Wheel stand: entry to mid DD, depending on the model's listing.
- Foldable cockpit: mainly gear and belt wheels. Check before adding DD.
- Tube-frame or aluminium cockpit: mid to high torque DD and heavy load cell braking.
Seat, space and screens
- Seat: a fixed seat stops you sliding back under braking, which matters most with load cell pedals. Many aluminium rigs need a separate bucket seat and sliders.
- Space: measure length, width and the path to get in and out. Wheel stands and foldable cockpits suit spare rooms and lounges; profile rigs want a dedicated corner.
- Monitor mounts: rig-mounted monitor stands keep the screen locked to your seating position. A TV on a separate stand works fine too, as long as it's close and centred.
- Mounting holes: check that the wheel deck and pedal plate suit your base's bolt pattern. Some bases need a mounting kit (Thrustmaster sells one for the T818, for example).
Australian availability
Next Level Racing (a Queensland-based brand) and Playseat are stocked by major Australian retailers and Amazon AU. Trak Racer sells direct in Australia and has a Melbourne showroom. Cockpits are bulky, so check delivery costs to your area, assembly time, and who handles warranty. Buying from an Australian seller keeps Australian Consumer Law returns simple.

Find my sim rigFrequently asked questions
Do I need a cockpit for sim racing?
No. A desk clamp works for most starter wheels. A wheel stand or cockpit adds stability, stops pedals sliding and suits direct drive bases and load cell brakes.
Can a wheel stand handle a direct drive wheel?
Many can handle entry direct drive bases. JB Hi-Fi lists the Next Level Racing Wheel Stand 2.0 as compatible with wheelbases up to 20 Nm, but check the model's current rating and your base's torque.
Is the Playseat Challenge X suitable for direct drive?
Playseat says the Challenge X isn't recommended for direct drive setups and points users to the Playseat Trophy instead.
What is an aluminium profile cockpit?
A rig built from extruded aluminium beams bolted together. It's very stiff and adjustable, and it's the usual choice for high-torque direct drive and add-ons like monitor stands.
Are there Australian sim rig brands?
Yes. Trak Racer is an Australian brand with a Melbourne showroom, and Next Level Racing is based in Queensland.
